Is Linux Right For You?
Even though the initial hurdles of understanding and installing Linux based distributions have improved greatly over the last few years, many webmasters are still wondering whether a Linux based operating system is right for them. There are a number of factors to take into account when considering your particular situation, including:
- Cost. While the cost a Linux based operating system will normally compare favorably with the likes of Windows, etc, you need to balance this with your requirements. Are you after a configurable system, or would you prefer a more rigid system?
- Confidence. Do you have confidence in your own abilities to install, uninstall, and investigate the various Linux distributions available? While today’s systems are much more user friendly, with lots of advice now available, you may need to install more than one distribution to fulfill your system requirements.
- Do you actually need a Linux based system? If all of your requirements are fulfilled by more traditional operating systems, and you are not looking to vary substantially from this line, do you really need to install Linux?
- Are you prepared to investigate the various elements available? While there are sufficient elements (distributions) of the Linux system available to cover almost any requirements, you may need to investigate the options before setting up your system. This may take a little time, so if time is of the essence then you may need to consider more traditional options.
For those prepared to take the time to investigate the various Linux distributions available there is a vast new market out there, which continues to expand (as do Linux support services). While there had been initial problems locating Linux based variations of the more popular software packages, this problem is now diminishing with many publishers releasing Linux based packages in conjunction with Windows based software.
With a little bit of extra effort, and investigation, there are many advantages to the Linux operating system. The vast array of elements and flexibility of the system are the main attractions, and the industry is emerging as a real competitor to more traditional systems, in a number of areas of industry.
