Mainstream Linux Distributions

While the Linux operating system has been shown to be very easy to configure to any computer system, the most popular area of appeal is still the mainstream/mass market. When combining the mass market appeal with internet download facilities, there is the opportunity for even the smallest of developers to create a worldwide exposure for their distribution. This vast array of distributions can often lead to confusion for the home user, in what is still a highly competitive marketplace.

While the number of Linux users is continuing to expand, there are a number of rumors and myths about the system which need to be addressed:

Linux Operating Systems Are Difficult to Install

This is really a myth as the installation of Linux Distributions often takes less time than the more traditional Windows system. While there may often be a number of different versions to install to create your complete package, installation tends to be fairly quick.

Access to Linux Based Programs Is Difficult

As mentioned in one of our earlier articles, the Linux Distribution industry is a multi million dollar market place, with new entrants joining the market on a regular basis. This in turn has created a useful sub sector to the market, with many distributors offering users access to a growing back log of downloadable Linux compatible programs.

Some Programs Will not Run In Linux

While the vast majority of Windows based programs will not run in Linux, there are variations of Linux which cover this situation. The distributions act in a similar way to the Windows Operating system, opening up the opportunity to use traditional Windows based packages with a Linux operating system.

It Can Be Difficult To Add Hardware

While this may have been a problem in the past; there are now a variety of Linux drivers available for installing all manner of hardware. Many manufacturers tend to release a Linux driver with their more traditional varieties.

Linux Is More Susceptible To Viruses

Strangely enough the chances of your Linux based computer being infected with a virus are less than more traditional operating systems. This is because of both the extra security functionality of the Linux systems of today, and the fact that few Linux based viruses are produced, and any which are released often fail to circulate in sufficient volumes.

While there is no doubt that operating systems such as Windows are the choice of the majority of computer users, often forced on them by computer manufacturers, the flexibility of Linux is proving very popular.
